So many people care about how they look to other people, especially on New Years Eve. They do what they think is pleasing or popular. They base decisions they make by what they believe other people will want. They see how celebrities are acting or discover the ‘new thing’ on social media and mimic the trend.
The decisions I make are to impress myself. I do the things I do to please me. Whether people like or dislike my decisions and who I am is irrelevant to me. It’s not a crazy concept, but I think more and more people are forgetting to live this way. Maybe because we live in an age where social media is so prevalent and celebrities are treated like royalty, people feel like they have a lot to live up to. Maybe they feel inadequate next to the shiny (filtered) photos on Instagram.
So they begin to change. Little things to start with. Something here, something there. Things that make them less like them. Little by little they fade from the person they once were and become a clone of someone else. At this time of the year, with the silly season in full swing, it’s visible more than ever.
Everything I do is for me. I want to make myself feel great! So, I do the things that make me happy. It may be something simple like staying in and having a bath after a long day, going for a long stroll at the beach, or taking a dance lesson because I know I’ll feel revitalized afterwards. I might get glammed up just to go out for breakfast. I was recently helping a family member move house and someone asked me ‘why are you so dressed up?’ Why? Because I damn well want to and I damn well can! It might sound silly, but yes, I love getting dressed up. And yes, I do sometimes walk around my house in sky high heels. And why shouldn’t I? I love those things so I allow myself to do them, as silly as they may seem to other people!
I can do anything I want because it is for me. I’m not doing it because someone wants me to or because I’ll feel better pretending to be someone else.
I think it is so important to make decisions in life based on your own true wants and needs. Not because you feel like you’ll look impressive to others if you do so. Don’t ever underestimate how powerful it is to be in control of your own actions. You come out feeling proud of yourself and your achievements.
This New Year’s my resolution is simple – to continue living life for me and doing more of the things I love! My hope is for other people to read this and join me. Stop living to impress others – impress yourself.
So go out right now and put on those high heels, or, if it’s more your style go barefoot! Do what you love in 2016 and shine bright doing it!
